Beginner's Guide to Amigurumi

By María Victoria de Wovenpop

Starting your amigurumi journey can feel overwhelming, but with the right tips and a little practice, you'll be creating adorable creatures in no time!

What is Amigurumi?

Amigurumi is the Japanese art of crocheting small stuffed creatures. The word comes from "ami" (crocheted or knitted) and "nuigurumi" (stuffed doll).

Essential Supplies

Yarn

  • Start with worsted weight (medium) yarn
  • Acrylic yarn is budget-friendly and easy to work with
  • Cotton yarn gives a firmer structure

Hook Size

  • Use a hook one size smaller than recommended for your yarn
  • This creates tighter stitches that won't let stuffing show through

Other Essentials

  • Fiberfill stuffing
  • Safety eyes (various sizes)
  • Tapestry needle
  • Stitch markers
  • Scissors

Basic Techniques

Magic Ring

The foundation of most amigurumi pieces. Practice this until it becomes second nature!

Single Crochet

The most common stitch in amigurumi. Keep your tension consistent.

Increases and Decreases

Learn to shape your work by adding and removing stitches.

Common Beginner Mistakes

  1. Loose Tension: Keep stitches tight to prevent gaps
  2. Wrong Hook Size: Too large creates loose fabric
  3. Under-stuffing: Firm stuffing maintains shape
  4. Poor Assembly: Take time with attachment

Your First Project

Start with something simple like a small ball or basic animal. Don't worry about perfection - every crocheter started as a beginner!

Tips for Success

  • Practice basic stitches before starting a project
  • Use stitch markers religiously
  • Stuff as you go, not at the end
  • Don't be afraid to unravel and start over

Happy crocheting! 🧶
